What is a QR Code?
A QR Code (Quick Response Code) is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information in a matrix of black and white squares. Invented in 1994 by Denso Wave, a subsidiary of Toyota, QR codes were originally designed to track automotive parts. Today, they are used worldwide for sharing URLs, contact information, WiFi credentials, payment links, and more.
QR codes can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 7,089 numeric characters. They include error correction โ up to 30% of the code can be damaged and still be readable. This makes them durable for printing on packaging, business cards, posters, and even clothing.
Our QR code generator supports 5 data types: website URLs, plain text, WiFi network credentials (auto-connect for phones), email addresses (with optional subject/body), and phone numbers (tel: links). All generation happens in your browser โ no uploads, no tracking, complete privacy.

QR Code Best Practices
- Size matters: Minimum size for print is 2cm ร 2cm (0.8in ร 0.8in). For digital display, 150ร150px is sufficient.
- High contrast: Dark modules on light background scan best. Avoid light-on-dark or low-contrast colors.
- Quiet zone: Leave white space around the QR code (at least 4 module widths). No text or images touching the code.
- Test before printing: Scan with multiple devices and apps (iOS Camera, Google Lens, WhatsApp) before mass production.
- URL shorteners: Short URLs create simpler QR codes that scan faster. Use our URL shortener.
- Avoid curved surfaces: QR codes on bottles or cylinders may not scan. Use flat surfaces.
๐ Pro Tip: Always include a call-to-action near your QR code ("Scan me", "Open menu", "Connect to WiFi"). Users need to know what happens when they scan.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are QR codes safe to scan?
Generally yes, but malicious QR codes can lead to phishing websites or malware downloads. Only scan codes from trusted sources. Modern phones preview the URL before opening โ check before proceeding.
2. Do QR codes expire?
Static QR codes (the ones our generator creates) never expire. The code contains the data directly. Some "dynamic" QR services use redirects that can expire โ avoid those unless needed.
3. Can I change the QR code after creation?
No โ static QR codes are permanent. To edit content, you need a dynamic QR code service (paid). For most uses (URLs, WiFi, contact), permanent codes work fine.
4. How much data can a QR code store?
Up to 7,089 numeric characters, 4,296 alphanumeric, 2,953 bytes (binary), or 1,817 Kanji. For URLs, this is rarely limiting.
5. Is my QR code data stored or tracked?
Absolutely not. All QR code generation happens entirely within your browser. ToolHub does not store, track, or transmit any data you enter. Complete privacy guaranteed.
6. What's the difference between PNG and SVG download?
PNG is a raster image (pixels) โ good for digital use and small prints. SVG is vector (scalable) โ perfect for large-format printing (posters, banners) without quality loss.
7. Why does my WiFi QR code not work on some phones?
Older Android phones may not support the standard WiFi QR format. For maximum compatibility, also provide the SSID/password in text below the QR code.
