Understanding Ovulation & Your Fertile Window
Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovary, typically occurring once per menstrual cycle. This egg travels down the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilized by sperm for approximately 12-24 hours. The days leading up to ovulation â called the fertile window â are when you're most likely to conceive.
Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, which means your fertile window actually spans about 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. This is why tracking ovulation is crucial for both achieving and avoiding pregnancy.
The standard ovulation calculation: Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before your next period. If you have a 28-day cycle, you'll ovulate around day 14. For longer cycles (e.g., 35 days), ovulation occurs later (around day 21). This calculator uses your cycle length and luteal phase to provide personalized predictions.
This tool is based on the standard calendar method, which has about 75-85% accuracy for women with regular cycles. For best results, combine with ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), basal body temperature (BBT) tracking, or cervical mucus observation.
